The Raiders' selection of JaMarcus Russell as the first overall pick in the 2007 is bound to be considered one of the worst draft mistakes of all time. Russell was a college prospect out of Alabama who had all the physical tools to become a good quarterback; he just needed to have all the off-the-field intangibles like studying hard and working overtime in practice in order.Three years later, Russell is released because his unimpressive grasp of the intangibles a quarterback is expected to have. He has a poor work ethic and has not seemed to improve enough to win games even after years of taking starter reps in practice.
Russell will eventually get signed to another player but he will not be signed as an immediate contender for a starting job (no team in the league is that desperate).
